Support Indigenous youth on their journey to becoming educators in their communities
Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP)
NITEP students and graduates are agents of change and empowerment.
The Faculty’s Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP) is committed to increasing the number of Indigenous educators provincially and nationally. NITEP prepares Indigenous teacher candidates with culturally appropriate resources and services at UBC’s Vancouver campus and field centres across British Columbia.
NITEP’s field centres increase access to post-secondary studies for Indigenous learners from communities beyond the lower mainland of British Columbia and help students maintain their connection to home and community while pursuing their education.
Learn-and-Earn
Learn-and-Earn helps Indigenous high school students begin learning to become educators as early as Grade 11.
Through the new Learn-and-Earn program, UBC Faculty of Education, the Surrey School District, and the Vancouver School District will support an annual cohort of 30 Indigenous youth to graduate with education assistant qualifications and transition into the NITEP program.
The innovative Learn-and-Earn program enables students to work part-time as education assistants upon secondary school completion, earning money while becoming certified teachers within NITEP. As NITEP students, they will receive holistic supports nurturing their cultural identity, as well as tutoring services to support their academic needs.
